Last night's terrorist attack in London has devastated the UK again. At the time of writing, seven people have been pronounced dead, and at least 48 others are injured.

The Conservatives, Labour, SNP, Liberal Democrats, Greens, and Plaid Cymru have all suspended their general election campaigning in the wake of the tragedy, the BBC reports. Only UKIP have declined to do so, arguing that this is "what the extremists would want."

This morning, Prime Minister Theresa May will chair a meeting of the government's Cobra emergency committee. "Our thoughts are with those who are caught up in these dreadful events," May said in a statement.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn condemned the attack as "brutal" in a statement, saying: "Today, we will all grieve for their loss."

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has released a video statement condemning the attackers as "twisted and cowardly terrorists," and thanking the city's emergency services for their incredible efforts last night.

SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon, Plaid Cymru leader Leanne Wood, and Green Party co-leader Caroline Lucas have also tweeted to offer their condolences.

Prominent figures from the entertainment world have also been sharing reactions on social media. J.K. Rowling celebrated the defiant spirit of the UK's citizens in the wake of last night's attack and the tragedy in Manchester last week.

Naomi Campbell, Helen Mirren, and Cara Delevingne have each responded with Instagram posts.

Ariana Grande, who is in Manchester visiting the survivors of last week's terrorist attack, and preparing for a benefit concert in their honour, said she is "praying for London."

Today, people are being urged to avoid the London Bridge and Borough Market area while the emergency services continue to deal with the incident.

If you're concerned about friends or relatives who may have been caught up in the attack, you can call the Metropolitan Police's casualty bureau on 0800 096 1233 and 020 7158 0197.

Scarlett Johansson Is Not Down With The Shaming Of Women’s Sexuality

Scarlett Johansson's new movie, Rough Night, is a raunchy female comedy, which is something Johansson wants to see more of. Or at least, she wants to see more women owning their sexuality to break down that stigma. The actress appeared on the cover of the July issue of Cosmopolitan, and told the magazine her thoughts on women championing their sex lives.

"When women talk about enjoying sex, it's almost forbidden," she said. "Just having a healthy sexual attitude, you are labelled as loose, wild, a slut. You have no morals, and you're seen as some kind of sexual deviant or someone who can't be in a monogamous relationship. The minute you talk about enjoying yourself, being curious, that is still taboo."

This progressive attitude goes hand-in-hand with her passion for reproductive rights. She vocally supports U.S. sexual health care organisation Planned Parenthood, and believes women owning their sexuality will lead to better women's health.

"There's no reason we shouldn't be talking about our reproductive rights," she told the outlet. "They're something we have to fight for and continue to protect. There's nothing icky about talking about that stuff. Of course, it's private and it's your body, but we should take the stigma away."

Johansson says it's important for her to speak out because she wants to be a good example for her two-year-old daughter, Rose Dorothy Dauriac, who she had with ex-husband Romain Dauriac.

"I hope my daughter finds her voice and feels like she can engage anyone in any number of topics," she revealed to Cosmo. "I grew up in an environment that encouraged activism, so I never thought about the effect that it would have on my career at any stage. But I know it's a luxury, and not everybody has that luxury."

But as long as Johansson does, she's going to use it.

Justin Timberlake & Jessica Biel Mix Rustic With Modern In Their NYC Penthouse

New York City is about to get a dose of Memphis soul. Trulia reports that Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel signed the dotted line on a Tribeca penthouse that brings a bit of his hometown to the big city. With a red brick exterior and exposed timber beams inside, it's a little bit country with plenty of rock star details. Plus, Trulia adds that the building, which has seven other penthouses, also boasts a slew of other A-list residents.

You'll want an invite to any block parties with this roll call: Timberlake and Biel will be rubbing shoulders with fellow Hollywood power couple Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence, and newly minted rock star heartbreaker Harry Styles. Maybe this proximity will help push a Timberlake-Styles collab into being?

Famous neighbours aside, the house has plenty to love. Not only do the rustic architectural details seem perfect for a country boy like Timberlake, the 5,375-square-foot unit also has four bedrooms, six bathrooms, and a slew of extras. The most over-the-top perk? We're betting that the garage, which looks like an uber-luxe subway station, complete with tiled herringbone ceiling puts actual NYC apartments to shame.

And after JT parks his ride (or, more likely, rides), he'll be able to enjoy the building's 71-foot swimming pool, roof terrace, and gym. Oh, and as for little Silas? There's a playroom for the little guy and the other kiddos to romp in while their parents take in the Turkish bath.

At $27.5 million (£21.3 million), the property didn't come cheap, but after taking a look at the light-filled unit, its marble-accented bathrooms, and huge windows, anyone can see why Timberlake chose this spot to set down some Big Apple roots.

From the outside, Timberlake and Biel's new digs look like a classic NYC building. But inside, it's got all the upgrades and premium finishes imaginable.

This garage is almost too good to be true. JT's cars will be sitting pretty in this amazing space.

This dining room is sure to see plenty of A-list guests, especially with so many of them sharing the same address.

Exposed wood warms up a wide-open space and offers some contrast to the white walls and rounded windows.

This bathroom is enough to elicit property envy from just about anyone. That soaking tub looks unbelievably inviting.

This huge kitchen is perfect for Biel to perfect her recipes. Maybe she and Blake Lively can get together for some cookie-baking sessions.

And when everyone's done baking, hanging out, and parking their cars, they can all convene at this amazing pool, complete with semi-private lounges and an illuminated ceiling. Laps? Looks like it's more about lazing around in this pool.

This Teacher Is Dyeing His Hair Wild Colours For The Best Reason

For most of us, dying our hair is all about personal expression. Whether rainbow shades like gemstone purpl e or rosy pink, or more-natural ones like 2017's on-trend honey-laced brown, picking a colour has everything to do with mood, budget, and lifestyle.

But for John Sigmon, a middle school teacher in Kernersville, North Carolina, his hair is a bright, trendy shade of pink right now for a different reason: To raise money for a good cause.

Each week, the social studies teacher is leaving the fate of his strands up to the student that can raise the most money for a 6-year-old boy who desperately needs a service dog — and it's been quite successful. The students have already raised hundreds of dollars.

Warren VanTassel, a pupil at a primary school in town, was diagnosed with Epilepsy at 15-months-old, and currently suffers from seizures almost weekly. Sigmon hopes to raise enough money so he can buy VanTassel the service dog he needs to remain calm during his Epileptic seizures. Seems like an easy task, right? Not so much. It turns out, service animals can cost thousands of dollars.

“There's not really a whole lot you can do except for just protect him and hope that he comes out of it quickly,” Warren's grandmother Susie Hook told WFMY CBS News. He's had 85 seizures so far.

Sigmon’s hair is already garnering a lot of attention. “When I walk down the halls, there's always comments going on,” Sigmon told the news outlet. “The kids love it.” This isn't the first time he's used his strands to help a student in need. The local news outlet reports that he raised a whopping $2,500 (£2,000) three years ago to help a student fighting leukaemia, that time offering up a turn at shaving his head.

“Anytime we can be a positive influence, not just on somebody in need, but also get other people involved, that's what we're here for,” Sigmon told the news outlet. Only time will tell how much the teacher will raise — or what colour his hair will be next — but we wish him all the best luck, and shades, for his selfless endeavour.

Britain's Defiant Twitter Humour Proves We Are Not "Reeling" After Attacks

$

The UK has been hit by two terrorist attacks in two weeks, and no one argues that the country is in mourning. What the British would like to debate, however, is the assumption that we are "reeling" after what happened on and around London Bridge on Saturday and in Manchester in May. That word, which The New York Times used in a front page headline on Sunday morning, just doesn't align with the "stiff upper lip" mentality.

J.K. Rowling was one of the first to take the Times to task for this phrasing, tweeting, "The thugs who mowed down innocent people would love to think of the UK 'reeling' but it isn't," she wrote in response to the paper's tweet. "Don't confuse grief with lack of courage."

Author Robert Harris shared a photo of the Times ' front page, saying, "This sort of hyped-up headline does the terrorists' job for them. UK isn't 'reeling.' "

Twitter soon took up the cause, inventing the hashtag #ThingsThatLeaveBritainReeling, which has been trending throughout Sunday. Those things do not actually include terrorism.

There are many tea-related suggestions:

Quite a few other references to British comfort food.

Jabs at American pronunciations of words.

The struggle of the extremely polite.

After a van drove onto the pavement of London Bridge, assailants with knives attacked people on the street on Saturday night, killing seven and injuring 48, which is no laughing matter. But as London Mayor Sadiq Khan said, residents refuse to be cowed by this incident. This is, after all, the country that invented the phrase "Keep Calm and Carry On", printed on posters to be used in the event of a German invasion during World War II.

Many posted photos of this guy, whose response to the attack on Saturday was to flee with his pint of beer still in his hand. Whatever his intentions at the time, he has become the embodiment of defiance in the face of terror.

Brits kept the hashtag going with these quips.

One person noted it was trending above the attack in the UK. Talk about keeping calm and carrying on.

But if you think these Brits are laughing at the attack, think again.

13 Reasons Why Creators Drop New Hints About What's Coming In Season 2

$
0
0

What's going to happen on season 2 of 13 Reasons Why? The creators of the Netflix series had a few answers to that very question at Netflix’s FYSee Space in Beverly Hills — hints that were nearly as juicy as the clues Selena Gomez recently dropped about season 2.

We already know that Hannah won't be the main narrator in season 2, but, according to Variety, the show's executive producer Brian Yorkey elaborated on what exactly this means for the show. “Hannah told her version of events, but there are at least 12 kids who have another version of those events that we actually haven’t really heard from yet,” Yorkey said.

This lines up with the recent news that there will be new characters that fans are going to meet in the upcoming season. Characters that will hopefully provide a bit more insight into what's been going on at this school. “I don’t think Hannah told any untruths on her tape," Yorkey was quick to say during the panel. "She reclaimed her narrative, which had really been taken from her.”

Of course, that doesn't mean that there aren't other sides of the stories Hannah told on her tape that are worth hearing. Now it's clear we're going to hear them. Mashable reported that Yorkey said this season fans will get to see how those on the tape recover from everything that's happened, specifically two characters who have been hurt the most by what they've heard.

"Clay and Olivia Baker are two of the people who have the most healing to do and that process was just in its very, very first stages when Season 1 ended," Yorkey said. "Season 2 is also about healing and about how we go on, because people always say that you have to go on, but how do we after something like that?"

During the panel, 13 Reasons Why executive producer Tom McCarthy said it was also important to listen to all sides of the argument that the show could do a better job addressing suicide. Medical health organisations like Suicide Awareness Voices of Education (SAVE) have spoken out about the dangers of portraying such a real look at suicide. Other mental health experts have pointed out that the show fails to address Hannah's underlying mental health issues.

“I respect the opinion of experts, but being an adult myself I sometimes think, ‘Well, maybe we should listen to the people who are driving the viewership,'” McCarthy told Variety. “Young people want to have this discussion. Maybe they are telling us something.”

Recently, some of the stars of 13 Reasons Why shared what they'd like to see happen next season, which starts shooting this summer. Now we'll have to wait and see if the creators took any of their suggestions.

Touching Images Show People Leaving Flowers On London Bridge Following Attack

$

Shortly after last night's terrorist attack in London, people started leaving flowers on London Bridge, the site where three men in a white van ran down pedestrians before stabbing others at the crowded Borough Market. The attack left seven dead and at least 48 injured.

The flowers were a sign of unity from a city that has seen three terrorist attacks already this year. This latest incident came less than two weeks after the attack at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester.  In a video by the international news agency Agence France-Presse (AFP), people are seen ducking under the police tape to leave bouquets as police officers stand nearby on patrol.

The AFP reported that many have asked officers to lay flowers for them since they cannot make their way onto the bridge due to the investigation. One image AFP captured, that has been shared across social media, is of a woman wiping away her tears as she handed her flowers to an officer.

Others have started vigils in spots closest to the bridge, including Thames Path, where pedestrians are still allowed. Many are leaving cards, as one Twitter user pointed out, that send well-wishes to anyone affected by the attacks.

"First flowers arrive at cordon next to The Shard after London Bridge attack," one person wrote. "'With love, sympathy, and solidarity. We stand with you London.'"

Flowers are just one way the people of London have showed that they are standing strong during this time, just like the bridge itself. As The Telegraph pointed out, people have been using the signs on the tube to leave optimistic messages. One person even used one tube sign to write their "Q.O.T.D" or "Quote Of The Day" for the city: "London Bridge will never fall down. You can't break our spirit."

Bridges have become the site of terror in London, but also a symbol of optimism for the people of the city. Back in March, a man plowed an SUV into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge before stabbing a police officer to death in the grounds of parliament. Westminster Bridge then became the site of a vigil that brought thousands of people, many from different faiths, together. All stood by side to pay tribute to the victims of the attack.

Once again, London's bridges are helping make the connection among those looking for hope in the city.

These Teen Girls Invented A Straw To Test Your Drink For Common Date Rape Drugs

$

A group of high school girls in the US are trying to make it easier for people to protect themselves from having their drinks spiked with date-rape drugs. They want to make Smart Straws that will test the drinks on the spot.

Susana Cappello, Carolina Baigorri and Victoria Roca of Gulliver Preparatory High School in Miami won the Miami Herald 's Business Plan Challenge with their invention last month. The straws would test for GBH and ketamine, two of the most commonly used drugs used to intoxicate victims.

"Rapes assisted by drugs or alcohol are all too common," Cappello told A Plus. "We just want to give any gender a simple tool to protect themselves."

As part of their project, the students conducted a survey at Northwestern University and found that half of the respondents said they knew someone who had been drugged at a party and 85% said they would use the product. They are in touch with a testing kit manufacturer to figure out how to make the straw, which they want to be recyclable. They plan to begin a crowd-funding campaign to kickstart the process.

"We might have to change the name to Safety Straw sinceMcDonald's came out with a 'smart straw' last month that is good for drinking shakes," Cappello said to A Plus.

The concept sounds so good, you may wonder why it hasn't been made before. In fact, in 2013 a company called DrinkSavvy made headlines when it announced attempts to make straws and cups that would test for date rape drugs. The company's website says that "we are still developing our product for commercial release and will have them available ASAP!" Then there was the brilliant idea to make a drug-testing nail polish, which Animal New York pointed out might have some problems.

The biggest drawback of this product? That it only tests for two drugs, when there are many others that can be used in a drink to alter a woman's consciousness or judgment. The Smart Straw team understands they haven't invented the perfect product.

"We know it’s not a solution because it can’t end rape," Baigorri told Inside Edition, "but we were hoping to lower the amount of rape and dangerous situations you might be in through drugs."

Clearly, these budding entrepreneurs have their work cut out for them!

Trump Criticises The Mayor Of London After Terror Attack

$

0

Hours after the attack on London Bridge, US President Donald Trump took to Twitter to offer his support to the UK and weigh in on the London attack. While encouraging increased security, Trump criticised London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

"At least 7 dead and 48 wounded in terror attack and Mayor of London says there is 'no reason to be alarmed!'" Trump tweeted.

The problem with Trump's critique is that Khan's quote has been taken out of context. While those are words that the London mayor said in an interview with the BBC on Sunday, he was not saying people shouldn't be alarmed about the attack on his city. Rather, he was speaking of the increased police presence in the city following the attack.

"There can be no justification for the acts of these terrorists. And I'm quite clear that we will never let them win, nor will we allow them to cower our city or Londoners," Khan said. "Londoners will see an increased police presence today and over the course of the next few days. No reason to be alarmed. One of the things the police and all of us need to do is make sure we're as safe as we possibly can be. I am reassured that we are one of the safest global cities in the world, if not the safest global city in the world, but we always evolve and review ways to make sure we remain as safe as we can."

Many did not echo Trump's criticism. Conservative MP Penny Mourdant tweeted a screenshot of Khan's full quote and wrote, "Here's what @SadiqKhan actually said. He is right to provide reassurance. I'm standing with resilient London & him."

According to the New York Times, Khan's spokesperson said in a statement, "He has more important things to do than respond to Donald Trump’s ill-informed tweet that deliberately takes out of context his remarks urging Londoners not to be alarmed when they saw more police — including armed officers — on the streets."

Another politician is using the attack as a means to argue for stricter immigration laws in her country. Pauline Hanson, the leader of Australia's One Nation Party, tweeted a graphic that quoted the London Police alert to "Run, Hide, Tell," and wrote, "Stop Islamic immigration before it is too late."

In March, when a terrorist ran his car into pedestrians on London's Westminster Bridge, Donald Trump Jr. tweeted a similar attack on Khan. "You have to be kidding me?! Terror attacks are part of living in big city, says London Mayor Sadiq Khan," Trump Jr. wrote, again taking out of context the mayor's statement about security.

"Part and parcel of living in a great global city is you’ve got to be prepared for these things, you’ve got to be vigilant, you’ve got to support the police doing an incredibly hard job," Khan told the Evening Standard.

Did You Spot This Subtle Detail In The Handmaid's Tale Costumes?

$

Watching The Handmaid's Tale can be such an intense, overwhelming experience — pulse-quickening, , depressing, enraging, nauseating — that you're probably not paying attention to the little details, from the references in the dialogue to the hidden symbolism in the set design. So the fact that there are easter eggs in the characters' costumes that we failed to pick up on is not surprising. But now that we've noticed them, we're all the more impressed by the new Hulu show.

Costume designer Ane Crabtree spoke to Jezebel about her work on the show, starring Elisabeth Moss. And one of the pieces of symbolism that we learned about is kind of amazing: an subtle ode to the female reproductive system on the sadistic Aunt Lydia's (Ann Dowd) outfit. "So there’s this element of a vagina, inverted on the Aunts’ outfits," Crabtree said, before explaining how a piece of feminist art became the inspiration behind the design. "When I was young, I’d heard about Judy Chicago who did these installations in the ’70s. It was my first exposure to feminism in artwork and it really had a giant effect on me. I remember [in 'The Dinner Party'] that she had painted female body parts [on plates] and I thought, Wow, that’s amazing because you’re eating it, like, your food’s on top of it, it’s in your face. There’s no way you cannot see that and react to it. I loved that."

There was another motivation for incorporating the inverted vagina, though: subverting the patriarchy, fittingly. "[It] also came from that whole sentence I gave myself to be a Commander, creating these imprisonments called costumes for everybody. I wanted to put little 'fuck yous,” little humorous secrets for the women in the clothing. Like, 'You might think that you’ve put this military, long, priest-like robe on me as an Aunt, but there’s not gonna be a cross around my neck, there’s gonna be a fucking giant vagina!'" We love it. Check out Crabtree's metaphorical middle finger, below. Pretty sneaky, right?

Why Hasn't Donald Trump Publicly Recognised US Pride Month?

$
0
0

Thursday was the official start of Pride month in the US — a time to honour the history and accomplishments of LGBTQ people. But while Pride has, in previous years, been heralded with official proclamation by then-President Barack Obama (who also organised Pride events at the White House over the last eight years), this year, the LGBTQ community was met with silence from the Trump administration.

President Trump has still not publicly acknowledged Pride Month — though he did make the time and effort to officially declare June as National Homeowner's Month, National Ocean Month, African-American Music Appreciation Month, and Great Outdoors Month.

LGBTQ activists are, understandably, more than a little upset by the silence.

“Every June, leaders from all walks of life recognise Pride month and stand together in support of LGBTQ people, however President Trump chose to start this Pride month with deafening silence,” Sarah Kate Ellis, president and CEO of GLAAD, said in a statement provided to Refinery29.

The Human Rights Campaign responded to the silence with their own proclamation, naming June #UniteResistEnlist Month. The statement breaks down Trump's not-so-great history on LGBTQ policy issues and calls for activists to take action against the administration.

"WHEREAS, Donald Trump has launched a crusade against LGBTQ rights and progress by appointing anti-LGBTQ activists across his Administration, rescinding guidance regarding schools’ obligations to transgender students, pushing an unconstitutional Muslim ban and draconian deportation policies, inviting his cabinet to create a #LicenseToDiscriminate, proposing dangerous cuts to critical health care programs and research, and erasing LGBTQ people in federal data collection," the statement reads.

Although her father remains silent, Ivanka Trump has posted two tweets acknowledging Pride month, wishing everyone "a joyful Pride," adding that she is "proud to support my LGBTQ friends and the LGBTQ Americans who have made immense contributions to our society and economy."

But for many activists, this isn't enough.

"Even if Ivanka Trump tries to save face with LGBTQ Americans, President Trump’s negligence at the start of Pride month provided another example that this administration is no friend to the community," Ellis said.

While Trump's silence doesn't necessarily come as a surprise, many are still disappointed that he didn't take the chance to become the first Republican president to acknowledge Pride.

Bill Clinton was the first to mark June as Pride Month, a practice that was shut down during George Bush's eight years in office and then picked back up when Barack Obama took office. Obama was the first to host Pride Month events at the White House, which will likely also be absent under the Trump administration.

Again, although LGBTQ activists are upset with what seems to be a step back on support from the White House, this move isn't too surprising. Trump's administration has made several decisions in the few months since he started his presidency that threaten the rights of LGBTQ Americans, and Vice President Mike Pence has been repeatedly criticised for holding anti-LGBTQ views.

Despite the lack of presidential support, LGBTQ activists and their allies are still celebrating Pride the best way they know how — with plenty of rainbows and resistance.

"While the Trump Administration tries to systematically erase LGBTQ people and families from the fabric of this nation, LGBTQ Americans and allies must do what we know best this Pride month – stay visible and march for acceptance," Ellis said.

ISIS Claims Responsibility For London Attack

$

ISIS has claimed responsibility for Saturday night's terror attack in London, according to a statement released by Islamic State's news agency Amaq. The attack killed seven people and injured 48. Twenty-one victims remain in critical condition as of Sunday evening.

“Security source to Amaq Agency: A detachment of Islamic State fighters carried out the London attacks yesterday,” the statement reads. According to counterterrorism sources, the attacks may have been planned several months ago. An ISIS message posted yesterday called on its followers to “kill the civilians of the crusaders” during the month of Ramadan.

“They usually use these messages to simply inspire people to carry out attacks whenever the opportunity arises,” said ABC contributor Matt Olsen, the former director of the National Counterterrorism Center. “So, really, the real goal is to motivate as many people as possible in the hopes that somebody will carry out an attack just like this.”

At this point, investigators say there's no evidence of a link between Saturday's attack and the Westminster Bridge vehicle attack in March or the May 22 bombing at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester. Rather, the separate attacks are indicative of a growing movement in the country.

“It tells us that this wave out there is beginning to break against Britain and that we’ve probably got to be prepared for more," UK counterterrorism expert Michael Clarke told ABC News.

The attack began at around 10 p.m. local time on Saturday when a van crossing London Bridge struck five or six people, according to witnesses. The men in the vehicle then exited with knives and stabbed multiple victims at pubs and restaurants located in Borough Market. Witnesses say people threw chairs and pint glasses at the men, who were reportedly wearing fake explosive vests. The three suspects were shot and killed by police approximately eight minutes after they were called to the scene.

Shortly after midnight, Metropolitan Police declared the incident a terrorist attack.

This Is What Happens To Your Body When You Get Cheated On

$
0
0

Anyone who's ever been cheated on knows it can change you. It can affect your self-esteem, your ability to trust your partner, your ability to trust your future partners, and even your overall beliefs about relationships. To learn more about how cheating affects people, University of Nevada, Reno researchers surveyed 232 college students whose partners or exes had cheated on them over the last three months. Their study, published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, not only confirms that infidelity has a huge impact on your behaviour but also suggests that this impact depends on how you think of the cheating.

One of the findings was intuitive: People who experienced more psychological distress after their partners cheated were more likely to develop disordered eating, over-exercise, and use alcohol or drugs. "Being cheated on seems to not only have mental health consequences, but also increases risky behaviours," study author M. Rosie Shrout told PsyPost.

But there was one thing that seemed to make these negative consequences less likely: If people believed the cheating was their partner's responsibility, they weren't any more likely to engage in risky behaviours than people with less emotional distress. But if they blamed themselves, they were more likely to. This was true whether people broke up with the cheater or not, and it was especially true for women.

"This gender difference is consistent with previous research showing that women experience more distress after being cheated on," Shrout explained. "We think this is because women typically place higher importance on the relationship as a source of self and identity. As a result, women who have been cheated on might be more likely to have poorer mental health and engage in unhealthy, risky behaviour because their self-perceptions have been damaged."

The moral of the story? If your partner cheated on you, they made that decision. Recognising that — rather than wondering what you could've done differently — could save you a lot of unhappiness.

It's Lit! "Book Obsessive" Abigail Bergstrom On What She's Reading Now

Welcome to It’s Lit – a series of discussions about books. Join us every month to find out who’s reading what.

“My idea of the perfect afternoon is sitting in a hot bath and starting a new book. I’m very rock and roll like that,” says 28-year-old Abigail Bergstrom. Head of publishing at the talent agency Gleam Futures, Abigail represents “digitally minded writers” like Zoella, Caspar Lee and Tanya Burr. She launched the agency's literary division Gleam Titles earlier this year and is always on the hunt for “interesting projects online that could be converted into books.” It’s hardly surprising, then, that when she’s not reading in the bath, she spends a lot of her free time online. Her literary-skewed Instagram account @abigailbergstrom is testament to that.

Abigail got her start in publishing working as a senior book editor at Simon & Schuster, commissioning non-fiction. "The first book I published was Everyday Sexism by Laura Bates," she says, "I wanted to find subversive, brave and exciting voices." These included the multi-award-winning reporter Sue Lloyd-Roberts’ The War on Women, the Orwell Prize-longlisted Hibo Wardere’s CUT: One Woman’s Fight Against FGM in Britain Today and a series of books with TED Talks.

“I’m lucky because my job involves meeting with book editors who are constantly telling me what they’re excited about and what they’re heartbroken they missed out on,” she says. “I often badger them for proof copies because I’m too impatient to wait until things publish.”

Who taught you to read?

My mum. I’m a competitive beast, both of my big sisters could already read so she said I was keen to get going.

What are you reading right now?

I’m rereading Grief is the Thing with Feathers by Max Porter and I’m just finishing a three-generational memoir by Nadja Spiegelman called I’m Supposed to Protect You from All This. I’ve also just started The New Girl: A Trans Girl Tells It Like It Is by Rhyannon Styles.

Do you always have more than one book on the go?

Always, because what I feel like reading is reflective of the mood I’m in. I think I read more because of it – there’s always something on the nightstand that I fancy picking up.

Where and when do you read?

Everywhere, I never go anywhere without a book. But always before bed and always in the bath.

Do you prefer reading fact or fiction?

I crave the escapism that fiction offers but I’m a voyeur of emotion so I’m addicted to memoir and reading real-life stories.

When did you realise you wanted to work in publishing?

I suppose back when I finished my degree. I always knew I wanted to study English Literature because I loved reading and after that I was due to start my law conversion course. I remember spending my entire time at university doing law internships, exhausting every contact I had. But I couldn’t walk away from books – I chose what I loved over what felt like the safer option.

Can you name three up-and-coming authors you think we should know?

Olivia Sudjic’s debut novel Sympathy publishes this spring, a dark read about identity and obsession in the digital age. Yomi Adegoke and Elizabeth Uviebinene are publishing their highly anticipated Slay In Your Lane: A Black Girl Bible next year. I’m also eager to read Gail Honeyman’s debut, Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, which has already sold rights in over 20 languages.

Do you have a favourite bookshop?

Ti Pi Tin is one of Hackney’s best-kept secrets. I also love Stoke Newington Bookshop, it feels like exactly how a bookshop should be.

Photographed by Holly Whittaker

How do you organise your bookshelves?

By weight. I put that bookshelf up myself so it could come down any day now.

Which magazines are you faithful to?

The Sunday Times supplements are my weekly staple, ELLE is my monthly fix and I indulge in Dazed and Confused or The Gentlewoman.

Have you ever belonged to a book club?

Yes, my friends and I have a book club. It’s great because we all lead such busy lives now but no matter what, we know we’ll all be in the same room at least once a month. Unless the book is terrible... then suddenly everyone has to work late or they start claiming they’ve a suspicious ailment.

What do you use as a bookmark?

Nothing. I’m not precious with my books so I just fold the pages over. I also scribble on them so I don’t forget my favourite bits, crack the spines and christen the pages with tea/wine stains. I like my books broken in.

Which book would you save in a fire?

I had a short-lived romance with a guy when I was living in Hong Kong. I moved back to London, he moved back to Iran and we haven’t been able to meet in person since. But some friends of mine saw him recently when they were out in Iran on their honeymoon. He sent them back with a gift: the collected works in translation of The Divan of Hafiz – Hafiz is their most treasured poet and his works are a pinnacle of Persian literature. Most books are replaceable, but not that one.

Which three books would you recommend to a stranger?

All My Friends Are Superheroes by Andrew Kaufman, which is the most delightful and thought-provoking little book. Anything by Angela Carter. Everything by Miranda July. And one more, Girl Up by Laura Bates, because everyone knows a young woman in their life who would benefit immensely from reading that book.

Which book-related Instagram accounts do you follow?

I love Copenhagen-based artist @Johandeckman ’s irreverent and therapeutic covers. @PerfectBound_ is visually pleasing. And I’m weirdly obsessed with @pagesandpaper, a woman who posts pictures of books with her pet snake, cat and dog. It’s just so strange, yet intriguing.

Calling All Denim Fans: Introducing The New Cult Jean

$

Finding the perfect pair of jeans that are a) the right length b) the right fit around the waist c) not too tight on the thigh, bum or worse... (ahem, camel toe) d) the most flattering silhouette and e) the right wash, is no mean feat. We all have different wants and needs when it comes to denim so when a brand claims to have created a new style that is universally flattering, our interest is instantly piqued.

This season, our go-to denim brand M.i.h Jeans has created a new style for the denim devotee that will trump all the other pairs in your wardrobe. Enter the Cult Jean. A cropped, straight leg with understated vintage detailing and a 10-inch rise, the Cult Jean combines universal fit features with new denim innovation technology. Made from ‘straight stretch’ denim, this means that instead of the denim stretching horizontally through the weft, like all other stretch denim, it stretches vertically through the warp. In layman's terms that means the jeans give the hold that you only get from non-stretch denim and retain their shape no matter how much you wash them or wear them, but at the same time bend when you move, for the ultimate in both comfort and consistent silhouette. If your favourite pair of jeans have lost their shape from overwear (say goodbye to baggy knees), it's time to invest in these.

Chloe Lonsdale, M.i.h's founder and Chief Creative Officer explains to Refinery29 the universal appeal of the new style: "As a brand we have always designed vintage-style denim as I love the wash you get from rigid denim and the shape it gives you when you wear it. So when we discovered this new ‘straight stretch’ technology, which would retain the fit that rigid denim can offer but also a unique vertical stretch, I knew we wanted to be the first to market with it.”

Available in light wash 'Trip' and mid-blue 'Unwash', the Cult Jean is available now from M.i.h Jeans for £185. Here's to our new summer style staple.

Broad City Season 4 Looks Lit

If our predictions are accurate, we'll be in need of some serious comic relief by the time August rolls around. Luckily, Season 4 of Broad City premieres on 23rd August and we'll finally get our much-needed Abbi and Ilana fix. We've been looking forward to Season 4 since the Season 3 finale aired forever ago (well, in April 2016), but now that the trailer has dropped we're more excited than ever.

The rapidly-edited trailer is only 90 seconds, but it manages to pack in a whole lot of hilarious teasers about what's in store for Abbi and Ilana. Some "blink and you'll miss it" highlights? Abbi getting Botox, a trip to a Florida retirement complex, and a joke at Trump's expense. And, in typical Broad City form, there will be no shortage of nudity and hallucinatory drug use.

Check out the full trailer here:

In January, Abbi Jacobson clarified that the season won't shy away from addressing what life is like during Trump's presidency. She and Ilana Glazer rewrote scenes in response to the election results.

“We want to do a winter season—it’s pretty much always summer on the show. It’s happening at a good time too, because during the winter it tends to be a little more sad," Jacobson said. "I think we are going through an interesting time in our country starting from today, and I think the show will reflect that."

Still, there will be no shortage of laughs or great guest stars. The likes of RuPaul, Steve Buscemi, and Shania Twain will make Season 4 appearances.

The Important Reason A Woman Shared This Photo Of Her Dying Mother

$

A woman has shared a photo of her dying mother on Facebook in a bid to encourage people to vote Labour in Thursday's general election and protect the NHS.

Rebekah Hodgson, a secondary school teacher who is seven months pregnant, said she felt “compelled” to share the photo of herself sleeping next to her terminally ill mother in hospital after watching the Prime Minister “lie about the state of our NHS” on TV.

“I've debated long and hard about posting this as I feel it is a very private family moment which my severely ill mother may not wish to be publicised,” she wrote. Her mother, Juliana Hodgson, had been receiving NHS treatment for her breast cancer for the past three years, The Independent reported.

“I am a seven month pregnant secondary school teacher who has sat in the Royal Berkshire Hospital for 11 days with my mother and I can promise you that our NHS is struggling,” Hodgson wrote.

“That last night no one was free to help my mum go to the toilet. The staff were appalled with how long she had to wait for personal care and greatly distressed to have caused her and us such upset but they had to firefight. That [this] wasn't their fault.”

She continued: “I know from my experience in school what it is to desperately want to help but not to be able to; given a lack of funding and resources.”

While people are “impassioned” about Brexit, anti-terrorism and nuclear weapons, she added: “NONE of that means anything if we cannot give our loved ones respect and care, if the values our society are based on are forgotten. What would Manchester have done without the NHS last week?”

In the three years she has been spending time in the hospital, she has watched it “crumble” before her eyes. She added: “Please, if you really think it is just a 'lefty/Snowflake banging on about the NHS and schools' come down here then. Spend time on these wards. Watch the suffering and then ask yourself what the right way to cast your vote is.”

Hodgson said she “[doesn’t] want sympathy for my situation” but “justice for our NHS and its patients”. “For the 'immigrant' doctors who saved my mum on Thursday night, staying five hours longer on shift in a bid to help my mum meet my son in two months and for all the young people who want to go to Uni to study to become doctors & nurses who can't afford the fees.”

Hodgson said she wasn’t previously “the biggest Corbyn fan”, recognising the “flaws in his personal character and leadership” before noting "true of any human of course", and concluding her post with Labour’s campaign slogan, #forthemanynotthefew.

The post has been shared more than 30,600 times, received more than 46,000 reactions and has garnered nearly 4,500 comments at the time of writing.

Theresa May, along with the previous Conservative government, has faced harsh criticism for the current state of the NHS, which many have deemed in crisis. Many hospitals have chronic shortages of staff and dangerously long waiting times. Bursaries for student nurses have also been scrapped.

May has also been criticised for not guaranteeing the rights of EU workers to stay in the UK. There are around 57,000 EU citizens working in the NHS – without them, the service "would collapse", according to the Institute of Public Policy Research.

One Love Manchester: 10 Performances Worth Reliving

You have to hand it to Ariana Grande: Her One Love Manchester concert last night was a triumph, proving that guts and determination will always overcome fear.

The pop star called on the likes of her boyfriend Mac Miller, Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Pharrell, Coldplay, Take That, the Black Eyed Peas, Niall Horan, Robbie Williams, Stevie Wonder, Marcus Mumford, Victoria Monét, Little Mix, Liam Gallagher, and Imogen Heap to perform at the all-star event, though a local school choir may have stolen the show. More importantly, the audience included some attendees of Grande's May 22 Manchester concert, in which 22 people were killed by a bomb.

The show, which carried on despite the deadly terrorist attack in London on Saturday night, included a moment of silence led by Mumford and statements of support from many of the performers, including Grande.

"I love you so, so much," Grande told her fans, Billboard reports. "Thank you so much for coming together and being so loving and strong and unified. I love you guys so much, and I think the kind of unity you're displaying is the medicine the world needs right now."

It was a hugely emotional night, and it's difficult to overlook any performance. You can watch the entire One Love Manchester concert here; below are some select highlights.

The crowd got emotional as Grande closed out the show with a moving rendition of Judy Garland's "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" from The Wizard of Oz.

This isn't the first time Grande and Miley Cyrus have teamed up for a cover of Crowded House's "Don't Dream It's Over." They performed the song in 2015 to raise awareness for Cyrus' Happy Hippie Foundation.

Video: Via BBC Music.

"We will not be silenced!" Katy Perry yelled at the crowd before belting out her 2013 hit, which samples "Hard Knock Life" from Annie. The pop star also performed "Part of Me."

Video: Via BBC Music.

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin praised Grande for being "so strong and so wonderful" before launching into this duet from Manchester's own Oasis. The song memorably inspired a singalong following the attack.

The Black Eyed Peas may no longer be working with Fergie, but Grande proved a capable replacement for this take on "Where is the Love."

Pharrell tapped Miley Cyrus to join him on a duet to "Happy," but first he had this to say to the screaming crowd: "You know why I'm bowing? I'm bowing because despite all of the things that have been going on in this place, I don't feel or smell or hear or see any fear in this building."

Video: Via Miley Cyrus Live.

British singer Imogen Heap hit a melancholy note with a stripped-down take on her 2005 hit "Hide and Seek."

Chris Martin filled in for Noel Gallagher as he and local boy Liam Gallagher performed another Oasis favourite, "Live Forever."

Video: Via BBC Music.

Justin Bieber, who is also represented by Grande's manager, Scooter Braun, took to the stage to sing "Cold Water" and "Love Yourself." The Canadian pop star also made an emotional speech about the attacks, telling fans, "God is in the midst of no matter what is happening in the world."

The school choir from Manchester's Parrs Wood High School helped Grande sing "My Everything" in one of the night's most touching performances.

The First London Attack Victim Has Been Identified

The Guardian reports that a 30-year-old Canadian woman named Christine Archibald has been the first of seven victims of Saturday night's attack on London Bridge to be publicly identified.

Archibald's family, who hail from Castlegar, British Columbia, issued a statement about her death, noting that she was an advocate for the homeless.

"We grieve the loss of our beautiful, loving daughter, and sister," the family said. "She had room in her heart for everyone and believed strongly that every person was to be valued and respected.

“She lived this belief, working in a shelter for the homeless until she moved to Europe to be with her fiancé. She would have had no understanding of the callous cruelty that caused her death. Please honour her by making your community a better place. Volunteer your time and labor or donate to a homeless shelter. Tell them Chrissy sent you.”

Archibald was reportedly walking on London Bridge with fiancé Tyler Ferguson when she was struck by the van being driven by three terrorists, who were later shot and killed by police. Ferguson's sister, Cassie Ferguson Rowe, told The Associated Press that Archibald died in her husband-to-be's arms.

Yesterday Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau issued a statement condemning the terrorist attack.

"I am heartbroken that a Canadian is among those killed," he said.

The High Commission of Canada in the United Kingdom has noted that its flag has been lowered in honour of Archibald.

Meanwhile, the Guardian reports that French foreign minister Jean-Yves Le Drian has confirmed that a French man was also killed in the attack, though he has not been publicly identified. Authorities in Spain, Australia, and New Zealand have also stated that their citizens were injured or have been reported missing.

London mayor Sadiq Khan has scheduled a public vigil for Monday night.
