The Unexpected Hair Trend That Dominated The VMAs

What if we told you that the coolest hair trend to sweep the VMAs blue carpet last night could save you time and money, will improve the health of your hair, and looks totally badass? Too good to be true, right? Not exactly. From Paris Jackson to Nicki Minaj to Mel B, tons of celebs with totally different cuts, colours, and general beauty aesthetics were all rocking one unexpected style: dark, overgrown roots.

As you might expect, the purposeful look made each of these women look that much more carefree and cool, and copying it (if you lighten your hair, that is) is as easy as pushing your next hair appointment a few extra weeks. Or, if Julia Micheals is your muse, a few months.

Ahead, we’ve rounded up the chicest roots to take the 2017 VMAs carpet.

Paris Jackson had everyone talking when she denounced white nationalists on stage, but before that, she graced the blue carpet with grown-out, dark roots that juxtaposed her platinum hair beautifully. (Of course, we're also loving her on-trend upside down makeup!)

Behold: The former Spice Girl shows us how to makes DGAF roots look so damn glamorous. Mel B rocked her "you will never own me" dress with a blond-highlighted, side-swept faux hawk and wonderfully-overgrown roots.

It wasn't just Nicki Minaj's pink jumpsuit that got our attention last night — her knee-length, rainbow hair had us all in awe. The platinum blond and pastel pink hues looked killer together and were perfectly accented with a soft, brown shadow at the root.

Fifth Harmony's Ally Brooke didn't just kill it on stage at the VMAs, her mid-length, beachy waves looked so cool with dark roots.

If you thought we were done with slicked-back hair, well, think again. JinJoo Lee's of DNCE proved the trend is still going strong — and so chic with deliberate roots.

Although her performance of "Issues" was tragically cut short, we're still raving about Julia Micheals' blue carpet beauty look. Minimal makeup and dark-brown roots made the songstress look confident in her natural skin and hair.
